Hi Barney --- I have a few new plantings where the mama was outgrown by 2 strong pups. At this time of year it would be a good idea to cut down the mama and let the bigger of the pups go to fruit. But no more than 2. That way you get fruit in 2014. I think the original mama pups were weak to begin with and the cold just made things worse. Once the mat is a few years old the greater corm mass will eliminate problems.
