Welcome to the bunch. It looks like Pawleys Island is right on the border of the USDA Hardiness zones of 8a and 8b. Make sure when you research for bananas to grow, you look at the growing or hardiness zone. There are some edible "Cold Hardy" banana varieties. I depends on if you want to look at them or the added benefit of consumption.
I grow in zone 8b. My Orinocos overwintered just fine and gave me a couple bunches of Bananas this year. We just picked and ate our first bunch as we are newbies too. We loved them and are looking forward to baking some banana bread!
