A weird thing I forgot to mention (and maybe I read it in that article that I linked to) is that hardy kiwi is like catnip to cats and they can damage the plants. I haven't noticed any damage on my still potted kiwis by my cats or even the strays around, but it was reported to be true. At least if you ever see something that looks like your kiwis were absolutely trashed you will have an idea of what may have happened.
