I know the initiator of this post is no longer here but for general information here is some information on all the commercial variety grown in P.R., By the way in P.R almost all the production is consume locally with very litter export.


Varieties:

All commercial banana varieties
in Puerto Rico are the type that Horn
characterized by that the dried pampana according
cluster develops. The Maricongo produces
90 percent of production and the Dwarf
Common and produces 10 remaining Harton.

Maricongo

· It can grow 10-17 feet.
· Produce an average of 46 fruits per
cluster. (found clusters
30 fruits and 60 in a plantation).
· The shape of the cluster is less conical
the Common Dwarf

Common Dwarf

· Grows 8-12 feet.
· Produces clusters with an average of 35
fruits.
· The fruits of the first hand are more
large fruits of the last hand.

Harton

· Produces clusters of less than 30 fruits.
· Fruit large (l pound
approximately)
