Thanks, Steve. I did add perlite to a potting mix that had perlite in it already and quite a bit of compost. It seems fairly "fluffy" and, as I wrote, I've been keeping it on the dry side. Another friend suggests that I probably should have held off on the fertilizer, even though it got very little.
