Welcome. As to guidance, first of all, I would say to quit looking at those variegated bananas because it's addicting. I never thought I'd do it, but I finally broke down and bought an Ae Ae for $200 and then I bought a variegated Namwah from Thailand next week. You shouldn't worry about "birdbangkok" on eBay from what I've heard (plant is on the way), except for the shipping cost.

Being in zone 8, you could start out with Dwarf Namwah, Rajapuri, Dwarf Brazilian, and a California Gold, if you can find one.
