Try checking the blog Dokmai Dogma. The blog is written by plant scientist of some kind who lives in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. He has a large property where he cultivates numerous interesting plants. You can visit the garden, and I think he'll be able to tell you something about Thai banana species. The garden has a website, Dogmai Garden, I think. The man's name is Erik (or Eric), and he's Swedish. Good luck.
