But, depends what you're shooting. If you are doing street photography and short to medium shots a prime lens might be a better option. A 50mm lens would run you about $120. It would be faster, gather more light, and be sharper as well.

But if you are buying a camera + lens package the 18-55mm is a fantastic lens. Personally I like the 55-200mm lens. It is overall a better lens than the 55-300mm. The 300 is a little softer on both ends. Get the VR version. Also remember that these are crop sensor cameras so the 200mm is "actually" getting you a 300mm view.

KenRockwell.com: Photography, Cameras and Taking Better Pictures has reviews on most lenses and he can be critical, and also very pro-to some lenses.

If you haven't bought anything at all yet I'd suggest getting a used or new D90 BODY and a 50mm or 18-55mm, and later the 55-200mm. Depends on your purposes as well.

Once you do weddings, macros and scenery you'll know what kind of lens you'd want to meet your needs. So the 18-55 ($160) or the 50mm ($120) could be a good start and then go from there.

Just my two cents. Hope it helped and didn't confuse you.
Tommy Thanks so much for your help.
So 55-200 vs 55-300lens -55-200 is better right?
D90 is out of my budget. So I may stick with d3100. because it's lot lighter, less money, newer and i am not a pro.
I am not sure i am going to do any weddings, but i want to get a macro lens too,

Thanks so much for your time and help
