The 18-55 is a very versatile lens, as is the 55-300. The two together cover pretty much every thing but macro.The major difference in the two bodies is the swivel lcd, a little larger sensor and a full frame per second faster burst mode on the D5100. Also if you plan on bargain hunting for older Nikon glass in the future then you want the D5100 because the D3100 won't be able to auto focus the old glass.
