Nate, while possibly not as hardy as you're looking for, I got a good size Washingtonia Robusta, the Mexican Fan Palm, for $39.99 at a local nursery. I believe it was a Monrovia plant. In its pot it is as tall as me (to the top of the leaves), with a solid trunk.
For New Jersey I'll have to bring it indoors for the winter, but further south who knows?
