I don't think, that this is as absurd as it may seem to some. Until early 20th Century the predominant
method to develop new varieties of plants, aside from cross pollination was by selective propagation of
mutants. If you planted say a dozen or so seeds, you might then get one or more which produce elongated
fruit.
The Russian biologists Mitchurin and Lysenko did a lot of this kind of work in propagating "acquired
characteristics", often making species more cold hardy by selection and propagating cold survivors.
Now, if you have a lot of time and patience you could do that too, but there may be a speedier method,
by trying to graft the twig the orange is hanging on on some other branch. Depending on the length of
the twig, you may have enough for two or three grafts as well as leaving a couple of buds for possible
future production of elongated oranges.
