My Banana's New Home
Hi all!
We moved from Pacific Grove, California to Davenport, California. Davenport is a very small "town" 10 miles north of Santa Cruz. It is on the coast and is a really beautiful place! The population is a mix of artists, surfers, Mexican people associated with the farms, ocean people, etc. It is a great place to live.
We are right across the road from the ocean up on a high sandstone bluff. We don't get the BLAST of salt from the ocean here thankfully! Our place is a rustic little loft with a large paved enclosed courtyard. I am turning it into a little tropical oasis with black bamboo, bird of paradises, staghorn ferns, orchids, etc.
Notice I did not list my bananas there! Well, that is because I put one outside and the leaves got burnt. :-(
I guess I need to acclimate the bananas to the full sun outdoors. IF I decide to grow them there. Any ideas about how to acclimate them?
Our indoor space is great for plants: two skylights, concrete floor and high ceilings rising up to about a 20 foot peak. I would LOVE to see a banana towering up there! How about a banana Christmas tree?!
BTW, I have just two bananas: an unidentified one but which I think is a Red Abyssinian and a Super Dwarf Cavendish. Three more bananas are on their way. I would LOVE to have a pet Ae Ae!
I am still trying to determine my climate zone here...it is 14 in Santa Cruz.
