The main benefit of seaweed is the plant hormones it contains. When plants uptake these, it causes them to do more of what they are currently doing. If the plant has sufficient nutrients in the soil (plants feed on inorganic minerals), then the plant does a prolific job in its current growth mode. If there are not sufficient nutrients, then the plant can suffer from exhaustion.
