You need to try both 'Pink China' and 'Black Pearl'. Both this past winter survived with just less than an inch of mulch covering them. We got down to 1f and had snow and rain and temps below freezing for a week or so at a time. I haven't had any luck with Canna's surviving here either, but these EE's do.
