Magilla-
I've had good luck with PVC - schedule 40 is best.
If you lash 2 -10 foot pieces of 3/4" together about a foot from the end, you then have a bipod that adjusts to the terrain. Cross the poles, slide under stem of banana bunch, and walk ends in towards plant until you're happy. It's reusable, can be painted, and lasts forever. Cheap too !
