Default Getting ready for winter 2010/11

Last Friday's weather news threatening an early air frost in Southern England prompted me to make some hasty preparations to bring the 'naners in for the winter. This year I've added a 200mm (8") layer of well rotten compost over the top of my heated coils. The idea being firstly to plant the garden plants direct into this medium rather than into pots (the outside's of which can be vulnerable to temp. fluctuartions and secondly to add to the thermal mass of the biosphere making it easier to carry the plants across a cold period. we'll see. see pics
