You don't understand the nature of army worms. A farmer can have a partial infestion of 100 sq.ft. in the afternoon, try treating it with a bacterial or pyrethrin/pyrethroid/saffra approach, then wake up the next day to find the critters have completely destroyed 40 to 100 acres.

Chickens are a poor choice in most situations because they also destroy plants.
