I would say pot cultivation COULD reduce pup number/time of onset. However, it really depends on the variety. I've had some that pup very readily at young ages in a pot. I've also had others (like my IC) that have grown significant lengths of time/size (6-7 feet of pstem and just got my first pup after well over a year) before showing ANY signs of pups. I'm sure in the soil they do pup better, but many varieties pup just fine in a pot. Not sure how definitive of an answer that was, but that's my experience.
