Yeah, they definitely go outward much farther than they go downward. I'm not certain how deep they typically go, but I've heard reports of them stretching outward in excess of 15' from the plant. Given, you probably don't need to clear that large of an area for your plants, but that is how far they will stretch if uninhibited.
