Default Digging up a Bird of Paradise for winter possible?

I have a white Bird of Paradise in a pot in my sun room and I was wondering if you could do the "putting the bananas to sleep for the winter thing" (Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter)
with other plants that are Banana-ish?
Since the BOP's get pretty big, would it be possible to dig them up, cut the leaves, put them in a cool garage, and then replant the following season?
Could it work with a plant like a "traveler's palm"?
