Red face Going Bananas on the Texas Coastal Bend

I read about the International Banana Society in the July/August 2009 issue of Texas Gardener entitled "Going Bananas Along the Gulf Coast". I actually live on the Texas Coastal Bend in a little sleepy shriming town, i.e. Rockport, Texas. I moved here full time in 1996, and my house came with an established banana grove. I had bananas before with living in Houston and north Florida, but never had any of them produce bananas. Boy was I ever surprised when that first year they produced one bunch of bananas, and since, I have had so many pounds of bananas produced that I started giving them away including giving them to a chef friend of mine.

I am one of the founders of the Rockport Herb & Rose Study Group where the members give monthly programs. Last month I gave one on "Going Bananas", and I was somewhat surprised to read that bananas are the world's largest herbs.

I look forward to continuing to learn more about bananas on this site.
