Very rare Cuban palm - Coccothrinax Alexandri

Got these from a very special palm nursery in Loxahatchee. This was my first visit to Carribean Palms, and was very impressed by the size and scope of this one man operation. Mike Harris grows from seed.

The Coccothrinax Alexandri is native only to Cuba. Grows on the rocky limestone coast of eastern Cuba constantly exposed to wind and ocean spray. Gets to 75+ feet and the stiff fronds are 3' across and have a silvery white underside.

I was also wowed by 2 others that he has raised to specimen size in the ground. Copernicia Fallaensis and Dictosperma Album var Conjugatum. Sorry, no pics. I'll bring camera on next visit when I decide which one of these I want.

Potted, of course, cause -------------- folks - palms ain't cheap like bananas. Most local nurseries that I know won't charge more than 10 to 20 bucks for a small to med banana pup cause there is not alot of interest by the general public.

Anybody visiting So Fla, and is a palm nut, has to make a stop and see Mike's stuff. BTW - he does not ship.

Awesome! Thank you very much for the pictures and everything! :woohoonaner:

Copernicia fallaensis is truly a beauty as well and a giant one! It really will need the ground eventually if you get it. I think the main consideration would be cold hardiness as otherwise Copernicia sp. are very successful once established in the ground :) They do tend to do ok even with -2C i think.

Dictyosperma album is not very cold hardy but better check with your local palm lovers. It may be cold hardy enough for your area.

Large King palms at one time were selling for more than $100 a ft. in San Diego. Now they have a hard time getting rid of them
