Really cool Vickie, you have me missing my ponds I had as a kid. Is the lilypons from the company with that name in Mass? I used to buy a lot from them in the early 80's. ...........Really have to get a bigger property soon.

Funny but the pond I dug at my mothers is still full of water with a tetra liner rated for 10 years.....it's going on 30. They don't make'm like they used to:ha:.

Vickie- sorry, Bob's humor derailed me. Those are beautiful pics of some gorgeous lilies. I am so bummed that my Avalanche and Foxfire did not make it through the winter even though I had them in a tank inside. Oh well, I'm glad I at least have the Black Princess. Maybe I should get a yellow next...hmmmm.

Salty my Avalanche tuber did not sprout this year. My Foxfire did, I save the tubers and store them for winter. If no tubers I try to cut the plants smaller and put them in aquariums. I put them in aquariums with lights heater and filters and fish. I have some succes on wintering them over in aquariums.

This is exactly what I did (in an 20 gal long aquarium), and they looked fine until the last few months they just dwindled away. I did put them out in the pond (they were in their pots all winter), but nada.
My pond is approx. 1,000 gallons. Its rock lined over the liner, and has a waterfall to a 6 ft. stream in to the pond. Depth in the deep part is 2 1/2 to 3 ft.Have around a dozen fish in total, mostly goldfish (sarassa, calico, and fantails), 3 small butterfly koi and about a dozen fathead minnows. In the pond I have growing currently....1 hardy lily, 1 lotus, Pretoria canna, Thalia dealbata, Colocasia esculenta Illustris, Lobelia cardinalis, calla lily, parrot's feather, dwarf umbrella, Sarracenia pitcher plant. I have lots planted around the pond, but as they're not in a bog, they're regular trops and semi trops. There are pics in my gallery and my Flickr and Webshots pages.
I love my pond!

edit- here's a small pic of the pond.

Salty I love your pond. I can see why you love your water garden. Mine are a way to relieve my stress. I don't have any pitcher plants. I have seen them. In the fall it is quite a job to put all these plant up for the winter. I have about 59 different tropical water lilies. And many tropical plants both land and water.

Re: some of my water lilies

Those are beautiful water lillies you have there. I made a lilly pond years ago at my house when I lived in Florida. But, it did not really last too long. There are some incredible natural lillies around where I live, the Vitoria regia (or amazonica). I thought you might be interested in what they look like growing in habitat here in Amzonia.

I donīt really have a good picture of a flower, but these give a good idea of where they grow naturally.

amazon I am so jealous. I am growing Victoria cruziana from seed. I am zone 6 and it has been a cool summer which doesn't help. I have it in a Thermoplanter, which is an electric pot. It is starting to get leaves that are getting rims on them. I have untill oct for it to bloom, I hope I get to see it, the first nights bloom will be white then the next two nights it will be pink. I hear it smells like pineapple.

Re: some of my water lilies

Vickie,

I hope your plants get to bloom. If you look at the trees in the first picture you will notice where the dark stops. This is the high water period from the previous year. When the water is at itīs yearly low mark many of the areas where you see water will be dry, or very shallow. These lillies only appear and bloom in the period between the high and low water. When the water gets too high they are flooded and disappear. When it is too low they die back and go dormant.
