So who here grows Carnivorous plants
 

Hey to all of you out there in Banana land,

As a person who grows Carnivorous plants, a.k.a cp's, I was wondering if any one else grows them? I've seen a few people through search who do but was wondering if any of ya are currently growing them. I tend to grow more sarracenias than anything but do have flytraps and a few sundews.

If you do a search of this website you'll find that we have had several discussions about CP's. Personally I only have one, a Puya that eats sheep and other small animals.

Alex... have been researching the sarracenias...they are wild!!!
Have been reading how to pollenate them this morning.
The variances in color & size are Awesome!!!

No Cheryl, I have had this plant for several years now. Mine is Puya Berteroniana and will grow the turquoise flowers. The Puya Chilinis that Scot had grows yellow/green flowers. At some point I may sell mine cause I can't safely plant it anywhere around the house, but so far I have been hanging on to it just in case we pack up and retire someday to a place I can grow it. Who knows! The Puya Berteroniana is very hard to find and I paid quite a lot for this one. I think it was around $100 for a plant that was 4 or 5 inches tall at the time. There is a similar looking but more common plant that shows up for sale called Puya Alpestris. It has smaller more bluish flowers.

Several varieties of Puya, a bunch of Nepenthes, some Sarracenia, and a couple of Sundews.

On at least 3 occasions during my adulthood I have attempted to grow one form of CP or another, and they did not fare well. :(

Someone here posted pictures and construction of a very nice, large bog garden with many CPs a few months ago which gave me some ideas on what was going wrong. When the weather cools and I get to work on my little stream through my oasis I may incorporate that poster's ideas and stick some CPs back there.

Hey guerich,

Sarracenia purpurea is hardy where you live. It is native as far north as canada. It is a fairly common species.

For whatever reason you did not prosper at growing them there is an answer. The cultivatoin of carnivorous plants is a worth while and relatively inexpensive endeavour. If you would like to ask any questions post here or PM me. I'd love nothing more than to see more people grow them.

I really want to start a collection since I really like the way the flower looks but I am just keeping it down to one plant until I can figure out how to grow them successfully. I don't seem to be having any luck though. I have a Sarracenia and the pitcher parts are all brown and crispy but good thing is I see new pictures coming up. Can they be grown in sphagnum moss?
