That Palm P-P-P-Palm!
 

I've been stressing over what type of indoor growing palm I want to add to my list of plants lately, and I just really don't know what type to go with. Just curious if any of you have any palms in your homes and if so, what types and which are relatively easy to grow in a lower light situation (not dark, obvi but not as direct as being outside?) If you have any pics too, I would love to see what options I have ^_^. Any tips on palm care would be greatly appreciated too!

I actually used to have one. I feel like that is the world's easiest plant to keep alive. I might get another one, but I am looking for something a wee bit more dramatic. Something that will make people jealous ;)

Actually right now my favorites are Syagrus and Parajubaea but they are not true indoor plants. I just hope my seedlings will do fine.

Try something like coco palm. It's not only difficult to keep alive inside, but keep alive in milder climate generally.
It's also the second most beautiful palm in the world and holy grail of almost any palm enthusiast.

I also have Dypsis leptocheilos and Laccospadix australasica in pots.

Jack - just to wind you up - the coconuts we threw into the palm hedge after the dogs lost interest in playing with them have sprouted! A problem as they can't stay there!

A small palm would be the most trouble free. Chamaedoreas for the most part can be good house plants. I have seedlings of C. tepijilote, C. costaricana, and C. klotskiana. Rhapis are also ideal indoor palms. Rhapis excelsa (lady palm) is the common one. I have one in the ground and also have Rhapis multifida in a pot. It's still pretty small.

Wow Isaac and everybody thank you so much. Excellent information, and you even have a grower. Although I'll have to wait to have 75.00 to spend on a myriad of plants to get them shipped to me, I'm sure from the looks of their plants, it would be well worth the money! That is seriously a cool looking palm!

That is Trachycarpus fortunei (windmill palm). They look much nicer when grown in shade.

I have two in my yard.The first one gets evening shade. And the second gets about half day shade.


I was at the hospital a couple weeks ago. There was a group planting in a shady courtyard and they looked fantastic.The petioles were twice the length of the second picture. And the leaves were much larger also.

For Chams I've got Cham. microspadix, metallica, cat and elegans planted in my front yard. Only the cat had trouble over the winter. Other palms are Sabal minor (hasn't grown enough to tell if it's Sabal minor 'Louisiana'), Phoenix rob and several majestys. The majesitys did not freeze last winter.

Plus other various tropicals.

UGH, I found the metallica at a local nursery, but the ones they have are A, all really sad looking, B, All full grown, and C, sixty dollars. Grrrrrr.

I want to plant a palm.Its all your guys falt too by the way !!!!!!!!
I want somthing small that does not get to big well actually not big at all.I donot want to have to prune somthing real tall are hire someone to prune. It gets real hot here in the summer and gets cold in the winter. I was thinking of the pygmy date palm. Any sugestions are any feedback for the pygmy date palm ?

Sabal Minor rarely grows a trunk overground with leaves 1-6ft wide. The lcostapalmate fan leaves tend to be smaller and more compact in full sun but get larger and do better in full shade with plentiful moisture. Sabal 'Louisiana' is faster growing than Sabal Minor and resembles a small Sabal Palmetto with a trunk up to 6ft tall. Livistona chinensis 'subglobosa' is a dwarf form of Livistona chinensis and does not from a trunk. Its costapalmate leaves are up to 5ft wide. Hope this helps! BananaLee

My suggestion is , as bikoro has mention: Chamaerops humilis.
Clumping, cold hardy, with trunk...

Thats a windmill palm. If you want a palm in cold places outside all year long, this it the one to look for. Theya re cold tolerant to 15F without damage and can handle down to 5F with damage. Once established most come back from brief temps arounf 0F. They arent a fan of too much heat and humidity and look much more tropical in shade (but if you are short on room, grow it in full sun because the leaves will not spread out as much). Because they dont take up much space they also make good indoor palms especially for people with high celings.


As for palms inside I like the parlor palm alot. Mine gets no direct sun and still makes seed every year. They stay small and eventually get a nice trunk on it.

Also butterfly palms make great indoor palms and lady palms are one of my favorates (but you will probably have to spend over 400 dollars to get one because they grow SO SLOW!!!!)
