Pete:
If you just give yourself a try and graft pome , pear plum or peach or apple first. They are the easiest ones to graft. Almost guaranteed that they will take. Once you get the hang of it, you can try citrus, persimmons and other hard to graft plants. Go to the internet and it will show you by diagram how to do it.
When you see a new buds coming out of your stick that you inserted into another plant what a great feeling you will have. And to think that it will bear flowers and fruit in the same year or spring you graft it, that's another wonderful feeling. It took me 4 years before I have the courage to do it but I did not know it is so easy like brushing your teeth.
I can graft a scionwood in less than 1 minute.

And thanks Frogg for your compliment.

a fruit stand alongside the highway.
Let me correct myself when I said 'highway'-
you can not interpret it as such like superhighway we have here in US.
The highway I am talking about is such that a 2-way road in the suburbs here in the US. There are many eating place, restaurants, food store, rice fields, fish ponds, trees, etc..... jotted along the 'highways'.
here's an example of such a 'restaurant':

James:
I don't understand!! You are in zone 10!!!! You should be able to grow anything there including mangoes and guavas!! If I live in zone 10, I will probably have a bunch of tropical fruits growing in my yard.
Do you have frosts there? May I ask?

Tammy. I am too old for you. Thanks, anyway.

Yes, I know James. I used to live in Florida. Lakeland, Jacksonville and Pinellas Park one at a time. The soil was just too sandy.

Add ground Peat Moss and Humic acid. "Quench" is also a great product if you can find it at a reasonable price.

Ricard:
I am so surprised this morning.
The babacothat I got from you is starting to have flower bud.
Imagine I only got that from you last year and without roots or leaves.
At least I think they are flowers.
I took pictures of them but they won't download to my computer.
I'll do it asap.
Also where can I buy pyrithin? What store carries them locally?

Richard 03-01-2009 02:07 AM

Re: Just Want to Show How My Other plants are Doing

Yea! The babaco will now put out about 1-2 flowers per week until the late fall, then slow down for the winter.

Pyrethrins are group of chemicals. The commercial product I like is Bayer Powerforce with the single active ingredient, Cyfluthrin. It is concentrated, only 1 ounce per gallon. Independent nurseries carry it, but you won't always find it in a big box store.

Re: Just Want to Show How My Other plants are Doing

Here's a picture I'd taken on 2/26/2009 but I had not seen the flowers then.

On the 2/28/09 pic I have a closeup view of the flowers.

My love of growing plants is not confined to growing bananas only, before the start of spring and before the blooms start, I'd like to show you my citrus of yesteryear's. And this is just a sample. I have so much more.

Thanks Richard.
But would it be happier if I planted it at my pergola plat which means on the ground? So it should be closer to my California gold.
I'd like to do the transferring when the frost is over in my area.

Thanks, James.

Richard my whole family will be going to Imperial Beach perhaps in about 3 weeks from now. Can you tell me a store close enough there to buy the fertilizer? And where is San Diego State located?

Plants That Produce (me). Let me know and we'll arrange a meet-up.

From Imperial Beach, you would travel north on the 15 Freeway and then east on the 8 Freeway and exit at College Boulevard. Bring lots (dozens) of $ bills for the parking meters.

If you are going to SD State, you might as well go one more exit east and eat at the world-famous DZ Akins restaurant. The food is inexpensive and don't order more than a half sandwich unless you are hungry.
