I only trim the completely dead material off the tree (fully brown and dry). If you cut the live tissue, you allow pathogens an easy way in.

If a leaf is partially brown, just cut off the brown and leave the rest of the leaf.

you can trim it when ever you feel the need. i have grown many in a teaching greenhouse that our floral design instructor used in his designs - i would have several pots full of nubs by the time the spring semester was done. i have never worried about infections but if it worries you just cover the cut end with cinnamon - natural anti-fungal, plus it will help seal the cut.

Re: How to Trim Palm Tree

If your trimming to clear a walkway, remember that the less weight will make it rise higher and change the angle. If a lot of frond is overlapping a walkway, trim just the tip and see if it rises out of the way enough. In other words, start by cutting just a little, not a lot, and it might surprise you how much it moves out of the way.

Best practices dictate not to cut anything green.
Sometimes, for aesthetics, it must be done, though.
Best practices also dictate that you allow self-cleaning palms to shed their fronds on their own, with no tugging on your behalf.
Anything brown may be cut away.
Cheers
