Re: Germinating tree peony seeds
If anyone was ever wondering about how the tree peony seedlings are doing, here are a few of them on my latest peony blog.
Steve's garden: Peonies going dormant for the winter 2012 I find that after they sprout, they are pretty low maintenance since they are completely hardy to zone 6 winters when they are dormant, and take a lot longer to sprout their leaves which means they are less prone to late freezes on their 2nd growing season. The only draw back is that these are very slow growers. If you have your own tree peonies which have seed pods that are well developed, now would be about the right time to take those seeds and plant them 2 inches deep in the flower beds. Fresh seeds can set roots in a couple of months and sprout the following spring since they never go dormant. |
Re: Germinating tree peony seeds
This year my newest tree peony seedlings are starting to push out of the ground, and the older ones are coming out of dormancy as their leaves are starting to grow now.
Here's a blog with a bunch of pictures of peonies at various levels of development. Steve's garden: Distinguishing all kinds of peonies |
Re: Germinating tree peony seeds
I guess everyone knows I grow peonies from seed, but another thing I'm trying out this year is grafting tree peonies onto herbaceous roots to make more plants.

Re: Germinating tree peony seeds
Just some more grafting with the grafts curing in plastic bags with wet sand on the inside, on top of my heating mat.
