European Fan Palm Growth Rate

I know it's VERY slow growing. How long would it take to go from seedling to say a 6' trunk? 10'? 15'? Let's assume fantastic growing conditions.

(Moderator; Other plants?)

Seedlings of all palms are extremely slow growing, and it's really frustrating. Once they start pushing out mature leaves, growth accelerates considerably.

I wouldn't say the european fan palm grows slowly, it just needs alot of sun and heat to thrive. Even where I live they produce several fronds in a season. But growing palms from seed is a test of patience.

in hot areas it wil grow quite fast, with some luck maybe 15 cm a year.
should do well in your area.

6' of trunk in 10 to 15 years? That's asking alot, maybe in an ideal climate with year round growth and routine watering.

Cheers, Barrie.

Barrie (I think),
He/She meant he/she wanted to know how long it would take to get a 6' trunk, 10' trunk, and 15' trunk. How long do you think it would take, Palmas? I am just getting interested in palms and enjoy Palms North a lot.

Its way to hard to figure out how tall they will be in time. Some grow faster than others due to genetics. (some will grow with many suckers and become very wide and others may keep a main trunk) You have to consider the climate and soil as well.

6 ft is impossible, even with a trachycarpus fortunei.

Buffy . . . You picked the most unrewarding Palm to gain interest in. A two foot brown trunk will take about four years, six feet ? . . I hope you are under fifty years old so you will see six feet before you go !!

Change cource now before its too late . . . get some seeds of Phoenix roebellini. The pigmy date palm will get to three feet in about two years (needs greenhouse protection in winter) and it will look good with multiple leaves within 5 months.

Another palm to consider that you can grow in your zone (with some winter protection outside against a building ) Livistona chinensis "Chinese fan Palm" Its dwarf looking when young and has wide deep green leaves. Really nice! Its cold hardy to 15*f.)

Re: European Fan Palm Growth Rate

wel, european fan palms can grow fast if you have the good soil type and enough sun. my seedling grew 15 - 19 cm in 2 / 3 months because of this.

seedling are just slow growing but you can give the palms artificial light with fluorescent lamps from 6:00 to 23:00 on each cloudy day.

the reason why european fan palms are not further north in europa is because the seedlings do not develop enough to withstand the cold, there is not enough sun.
