That's why I bought it JaNan...because it looks so much like a Siam Ruby! :08: I bought it at the end of the season for a buck but I have no idea how the flowers will look...likely some shade of red though.

Re: Canna Lovers Unite!

Yes, Nannerfunboi, it is Tropicana and thank you, I love it! I also have Tropicana Gold. I have quoted my first posting below at the start of this thread showing Intrigue. I may have other pictures of it through out the thread also. Sandy used to sell Intrique very, very reasonably. You might contact her and see if she has any this year if you would like to buy some.

Cheryl brought me a beautiful Pink Sunburst when we met up the other day to celebrate our birthdays.

My daughter brought me a Dr. Ingrid also for my birthday:

These are Intrigue and Journey's End with the sun coming through them.

jananas..i'll check out if sandy has any..thanks..
how big do the tropicanas get for you? im hoping they dont get real tall
5' would be good..
how do they keep their colour as summer goes? do they stay as intense
in colour ?
i would pot up my musafolias to get early start..but the corms are huge..
and id need some major big pots to do so.. LOL
so i just plant in late may.. they grow pretty fast for me.. but they do
get full sun where i plant them...

Olaf, you might try a timer. Just plug your blanket into it and schedule when it shuts off and on. They usually have tabs on them that can turn on twice and shut off twice - I think they are about $5 dollars. I have my grow lights plugged into them. They work great. I also have my Christmas tree plugged into one. I hate the thought of getting up in the middle of the night if you don't have to.

Hi JaNan,
I wondered, where that post was, since I planned to elaborate on it shortly after our return from Vietnam a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately it did not work. Once the power flow is restarted by the timer to the electric throw, it does not switch on again, since the switch in the throw was programmed to stay off under power until manually turned back on. But although I was out about $15.- it worked out well anyway. The throw c/w all the canna, calla, ginger and bananas is located on a shelf under a small sky light in our en-suite dressing room on the way to the bathroom. The switch hangs down right by the door, which I pass at least a dozen times during day and night and all I have to do is click the button 3 times on the way by, whenever it is off.
Best, and thanks for a good try,
Olaf

Here is a great canna link - I have posted it in this thread before I believe. It can tell you characteristics for your favorites!

Karchesky and Harris Canna Collection

Just click on "All Cannas" then choose how you would like to view them. Alphabetically, Color, Height, etc..... :)

I can spend all day at this site. ~J

I appreciate that. But you probably do not have them feeding into an appliance, where manual reset is required. ;)
The one I got for under $15.- allows 56 different settings, i.e., 8 different ones for each day of the week. I am sure,
that I will have some use for that gadget sooner or later. :)

Best,
Olaf

Re: Canna Lovers Unite!

My Canna rhizomes have wintered well, so that this year I have enough of them to experiment with a bit.
Therefore I want to try to leave some of them outside in a protected area over next winter. The time to
plant them outside is approaching and I would have to plant them on that lower level now.

Now, with bananas it is possible to plant them deep, enough to avoid the ground frost zone. Has anybody
had any experience with planting Canna Lilies deeper? 8 to 10 inches with a good layer of mulch on top
would probably be enough to keep them well out of the frost zone here, but may be too deep for the new
shoots to rise through in spring?

Thanks,
Olaf

Re: Canna Lovers Unite!

olaf..thats a good question..i never thought about burying my cannas
or covering them heavy for overwintering..
here in utah..cannas dont survive out over winter.. ive overwintered
glad bulbs ok.. but i do mulch them with a foot of shredded leaves..and soil on top to keep leaves in place..
hope others in cold areas may have tried your idea...

Re: Canna Lovers Unite!

cherokee.. with your new addition ermine.. and whitish leaves.. do you
have to plant it in moderate sun? can it take full sun?
im always on outlook for something new/intersting to try out..
