Re: Canna Lovers Unite!

Some canna hybrids are sterile and you can't grow them from seed, but if you get seeds they are easier to grow if you scratch the seed coat.

My tallest canna is now 10 feet tall. That ties the size of my tallest cannas ever, but it still has some more growing to do so it might get to 11 or 12 feet tall before it is finished growing for the year. Im going to post pics tomorrow when it will probably be in full bloom.

Olaf, I think that is Tropicanna or Durban in your pot with your Basjoo. Wyoming isn't variegated, it is a bronze purple leaf.

Thanks, JaNan,

I got it from a commercially packaged rhizome, which was labelled 'Wyoming', a couple of years ago and, while the
offsprings vary in colour and markings most of them resemble 'in real life' this one here: Google Images
on page 3 of the URL you supplied.

Frankly I think that there are so many different cultivars of Cannas, that they kind of blend in and overlap, resulting in
doubtful labeling.

Best,
Olaf

:03: Hi Olaf! Yes that picture is labeled Wyoming, but it isn't either. That is a page of somebody's (Amy) personal pictures. There are numerous hybrids which is fantastic, I think.

Here is a great link that I use often - they have wonderful pictures and descriptions and are hybridizers themselves.

Two of our cannas, don't enen know their name, are sporting seed pods. Now what do I do. Let them drop off, pick them and dry them, ??? My life with seeds hasn't been the greatest but here lately I'm having a little more success. Maybe I can do the canna seed thing an raise my average.

Alex, What is the name of this biggy? It might be of interest to us and do you know where to acquire one or a rhizome? Thanks

Re: Canna Lovers Unite!

Noah, I'm not Alex, but maybe I can help. I would guess a Canna Musifolia - also known as the banana canna. They get 12 to 15 feet in size in good soil. If you google that you can see the size in some pictures. If potted or in so so soil they won't max out like that.

Banana Canna (Canna ) - Hardy Tropicals Hardy Plantabase

I think there are some pictures about mid way in this thread of one I gave to Cheryl blooming for her. I have some shots of mine here also but I don't know if I labeled them. They remind me a lot when young of Ensetes because of the red edge to the leaf and the red stalk.

Mine have not multiplied because of our conditions this year, or I would send you one of mine.

Emily, those look perfect to me. Once established, I do very little to mine unless it is to give them a drink or maybe some manure (which is once a year in the Spring). They go through drought, leaf rollers, grasshoppers all sorts of stuff without any special treatment. If yours are two years old I would say they should be established and you won't have to baby them any. :)

Re: Canna Lovers Unite!

Thanks JaNan, we are cleaning up and clearing this property and are adding plants as we go. Most of our time and effort goes into getting the pasture areas in shape. Not as bad as you here but the rains aren't as frequent as usual and it isn't helping the grasses and seed to grow. Beats flooding though. Thanks for the info and we will start our search for a plant or two. Coins a bit tight but seems we can always find some for the new plants. There are a lot of subdivisions around here and I will put it on my list of what to look for. Have a nice day.

You're very welcome! :) Oh, I meant to tell you also, wait until your seed pods turn brown then you can pick them off. If they fall to the ground they will be hard to find!

Is that the growth for one season? If so, I would be careful when weeding, it might lift you off of the ground if you got too close.

Re: Canna Lovers Unite!

Yo Canna Lovers: Great pictures, does anyone have a source or two please for 'Dwarf Canna's"?

I wish to locate a wholesale source, for creation of tropical spots with our cold hardy palms and bananas. Many Thanks, Tom Kelly Portland, OR.
