Butia capitata growth in the Little Rock suburbs

Butia capitata can grow fairly quickly in a hot summer climate. Winters here are relatively mild with winter lows approaching 12*F. My butia's spear is covered when ice storms threaten and also have floodlights aimed on the trunk for a little heat.

Newly planted palm in 2005

The same palm this year

That's beautiful! If only mine would forget they're planted in a zone 6 and grow like yours. = )

Yes. I fertilize it many times a year with a palm fertilizer.

I thought so.. You must have a better soil than randy casue I know your has grown a foot taller in simular time period. Soil always has something to do with it. lol

Actually, the soil isn't ideal. It's growing in a hard clay soil mixed with rocks. Palms seem to love it though!

your soil sounds like mine.. Rust colored rock, I try to dig all the rocks out when planting anything.. I have quite the collection so far.. lol

That's a lot of growth in four years. Great job, Austin!

Beautiful palm. I think the butia is my favorite. Just brought one home from my brother in law's house in Gulf Shores. Hope mine will grow that fast. I sneaked and pulled it up a seedling growing next to his big one when he wasn't looking, so it will probably die.

Gotta 'cha covered Cathy... I have two decent sized ones ready for a home... One is about 5 gallon size. Looks to be a cross of Butia and Queen....

I bet it was just a jelly date that wasn't picked-up, just germinated and grew. It's hatched so it a matter of getting it in the ground and fertilizing it and keeping in a sunny spot.
