Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
were did you get the seeds Steve?
|
Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
I just got the seeds off eBay. It does cost about $1.70 per seed even ordering in a bigger quantity.
Here are some of the bigger seedlings. The tallest one is over 8 inches tall, and many of them are leafed out or close to it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
Thanks will look I want to try to grow these in my garden here.

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
If you are in a tropical climate where the temperature never gets anywhere close to freezing, this is a very interesting plant. Otherwise, they make pretty nice houseplants since they just keep getting bigger and bigger.

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
Most of the titanum seedlings have fully uncurled their leaves now. It's only a matter of time for them to produce their first shoots and get much bigger than they are. That will likely be by around summer time when they need to go into their own pots.

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
Got a few Amorphophallus specimens myself; one A. titanum grown from seed, just under a year old right now, has just gone into a slight hibernation period following a trip. Corm on that one's a little bigger than a golf ball; they don't seem to grow too quickly, but underground they're powerhouses if you feed them properly.
Three A. bulbifer specimens from a guy in India (who's provided some of my other exotic seeds as well, though these were all corms); one of the three I thought had died last year, as the corm had shrunk down to the size of a large pea (it was probably about as big around as a penny when I got it), but earlier this month it sent out a super-tiny new leaf. Hopefully it makes a full recovery. Finally, one Amorphophallus specimen I'm not entirely sure about; it was part of the aforementioned group sold to me as A. bulbifer, but its current leaf actually looks far more like A. konjac. I'll have to take another picture of it at some point, but I'm preeeeetty sure it's not A. bulbifer. Love me some Aroids. |
Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
Let's see if I can figure out how to post this picture...
![]() This is that aforementioned "mystery" Amorphophallus. Any thoughts? The splotches are from water that had dripped down onto the plant from another container on a shelf above; that drip has since been rectified, but they have nothing to do with the plant variety itself. |

Any telltale signs of a bulbil on the stems.? When small and immature these plant will look somewhat similar Once the plant recieves better growing conditions and full sun the look of the plant will change. The color of the stem will give a better idea once it changes......It should go from less pink to mottled green with a hint of pink and small bumps as it matures. I do not have current stock with foliage to compare it with.( still dormant) Too young to tell..... But if pressed for an answer.....bulbifer. If your vendor was selling Konjac there could be a chance you got bonus seed.:woohoonaner: |
Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
A closer look today in the basement holding area revealed a few of these Konjac tubers wanting to bolt.:08:
So I gathered up the containers and moved them to my much cooler garage. The cooler area will Slooooooow them down and give me another 60 +days . These plants are like clockwork really.......they know when it is time to grow. |
Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
Some of the titanum seedlings are sprouting their 2nd leaf now. They look to be much bigger than the originals.

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
Update on an A.konjac in the woods.
Plant shown is four feet across and four feet in height. These are hardy in my zone.. Bulb is grapefruit size and planted 6 inches below the surface. Plant is irrigated and fed 16-16-16- granular 2x per year. Plant is in full shade; however the plants in mostly sun show better growth and look a little bit more "aged" at this time of the year. These plants did not emerge until early July; however the bulbs which i overwintered inside @ 30-50 Degrees emerged early May.... so dormant temperature does make a difference. . ![]() Shots by Hostafarian, on Flickr |

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
Whoooa!!
This one wants to pop... Keeping the average basement temp of 58 degrees...... for most of the temperate bananas plants and all the other stuff>>> This temps now fluctuates +-10 degrees depending on the external temps in the spring months. This Aroid is in the area where the banana plants are kept for the winter. I have sister plants out in the yard.......which will pop in June -July??? This plant is a few months too soon in the photo...I moved it outside to the garage where the temps are 10 degrees lower to slow it down. April.....? maybe sooner. Bulb is a market size Konjac. The larger bulbs in the front are market size because they will bloom a couple of years before the small ones in the rear. The small ones can be considered as "new potatoes" which in reality command a higher price in the states. The tropical fish market is the same way. A few more pics can be found here. . ![]() Amorphophallus bulbs by Hostafarian, on Flickr |
Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
I moved all plants to a cooler environment- 20 f and delayed a few plants from prematurely emerging. But they do what they want to do......Bloom.

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
A. bulbifer
This year was a good year for this plant. There was multiple shoots off the bulb. I picked it up two years ago at the annual fall plant sale at Heathcote Gardens in Port St Lucie Florida.. Plant was from Gardino Nursery. This is the third amorph I got from them.... ![]() A.bulbifer by Hostafarian, on Flickr |

This plant will grow in zone 5/6......
I was very surprised at the size of the plant. The plants were not that vigorous last year. ![]() A. Konjac by Hostafarian, on Flickr |

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
I discovered some aroids coming out of dormancy in the dark cool basement.
And put them under some lights (cfls 900watts) rather than waste the growth. Two containers, Arisaema Urashima(foreground) and Arisaema Ringens. Metal Wardian case to the left. . ![]() Aroids under lights by Hostafarian, on Flickr |

Re: anyone growing amorphophallus?
Late in the season konjacs will bust the containers because of the weight the bulb puts on over the grow season.
Last year they split a few a few decent terra cotta pots so this season I put them in black landscape containers and then in a pot... These plants put on some great bulb weight. ![]() A.konjac splitting the pot by Hostafarian, on Flickr |

I had a few late spring hard freezes which has made these plants about a month behind regular growth.
The corms have broken dormancy and just starting to grow. The weather affected basjoos also. ![]() Three amorph konjac Musa velutina and a white musa tanee by Hostafarian, on Flickr |
