How to block a banned user/scammer?

I’d like to know how do I block a member from sending me anymore private messages? I believe that this person has been banned before they sent the message. I don’t understand how this person sent me a private message if they are banned? The message was about an essay website. Thanks!

Use your ignore setting found in the 'user control' panel near the bottom

Thanks for the tip! It’s nice to know there’s an ignore list! :goteam:

Yeah I see what you mean! I was just so shocked to find a private message from this person. I thought that these people only posted on my old posts. It makes me mad that people do stuff like that. Do these scammers/spammers actually think they’ll get any of the members on here to go their site and buy something? Seriously how dumb do they think all of us are anyway! :ha: Thanks for the heads up about the fake members! Now I know to keep a look out for them.

Cergcas, Donniemarshall & Billomero. I think all 3 might be the same person. All of them have posted on my old Aerogarden thread saying the same thing about essays. Yeah I guess once you get banned just make another account and try again! :ha:

Once they break into a thread the door is wide open for more shenanigans.

I've never seen those names b-4.

(for all I know I may be fake, too. Nope, it still feels like the real me)

Since all 3 posted the same message within a few hours, it is very likely they are on the same network. The way to band them is by BLOCKING that network's IPs. ... I don't know if our Mods have that ability but the ADMIN would. .... I've done this on another forum; the spam problem became non existant after a few months. ... I've even blocked entire countries from connecting to the forum.

So the Mods/Admins here either don't know how or don't have the proper forum control to do so to stop the spamming.

If there is an ACL (access control list) for the interface these connections come from, I am thinking that a block could be do-able.

Pretty interesting that there is a way to combat the spamming! OMG! You really were able to get rid of the spam problem all together on another site! Plus you actually blocked entire countries! Very impressive! Hopefully our site could be spam free some day! Fingers crossed!

This forum appears to be based on a VB web server. IPs are usually blocked at the firewall or at the IIS, but on shared Host servers the forum admin may not have access to those. .... However, blocking can also be done by the server itself by adding a pre-connection blocking unit ( IPAddressBlocker; or some such) to the server. .... The the Mods & Admins can simply add a spammer's IP to a list to block them; or by using 'wild card character *) block entire networks. IP blocking is much more effective than blocking usernames or user email address and prevents a blocked user from making/using a new user name. .... For more detail see https://www.codeproject.com/Articles...ing-in-ASP-NET

This is to show that Spam can be stopped (greatly reduced) and how a well run forum can handle the problem. The forum owner/Admin doesn't have to do all the work if the forum server is set up properly and allows Mods access to the Block list.

Wow! That’s pretty incredible! I am genuinely impressed that you know all this stuff! Glad to know that there is a way to make any kind of forum site safer. Very cool! Thanks again for the help! :goteam:
