Ever too late to separate a pup?
 
So, newbie question...

I've got this Velutina in my backyard; I've grown it from seed, and it's flowered once... well, twice, really; it's started a second flower only yesterday. It's got maybe 6 or even 8 younger pups growing from it, and I want to separate a couple of them to give as Father's Day presents. I was wondering if it's ever too LATE to separate pups from their parent plants. All of the younger pups are pretty big; some maybe even near flowering themselves...

Any advice would be appreciated.

I believe, that as long as there is a healthy (piece of) corm, the plant will prevail. I have just
recently transplanted a two year Basjoo old pup, which had just spent the second winter (Zone 6)
with momma. It just "hickupped" for a couple of weeks, before it showed again positive growth.

It is better to be late than not do it at all. But in all honesty and for good judgment, it would really depend on your implementation. There are some who could really use the extra things and nutrients like that while there are those which are already good with existing as is. Depends on how you have observed them to fair and be good at it. So the decision really falls down to you.

I've dug hundreds of banana pups from teeny tiny to over 10ft tall LOL and 90% prospered so my vote would be its never too late :-)

If you were talking about edible bananas, I'd say yes, sometimes it is too late because huge pups that themselves are getting close to flowering may be so stressed by separation and loss of roots that they produce a stunted bunch of bananas. But with an ornamental variety, I wouldn't think you'd care about the size of the bunch produced.

Do you ever noticed a setback bloom/fruitwise when you do this with the older pups? There's a particular banana in my yard that I've had for a few months but want to move to a full sun area. However, I'm a slight bit worried about it being roughly near fruiting since I don't know the variety and can't judge by height/appearance etc. The pseudostem is a good 7-9 feet now though.

Also, when you remove these large pups, do they take longer to recover than smaller ones?
