Tell me the truth about Musa Hajaray
 

Hi all banana freiends in Europe,

This is the first time to post on the European Section for the special reason
that many members are growing "Musa Hajaray" in Europe and so they may
be able to tell the facts and truth about this banana.

Recently I got a pup of this banana from a friend in Japan who imprted from
Germany.



There are los of things told and reported about this banana, but I do want to
know about its real cold hardiness from the growers who really actually grow
this banana. I live in a zone about 9b where Helen's hybrid can overwinter
completely without any anti-cold protections.
Any experiences not only for hardiness but also for general cares and so on.

Hello,
i have a Hajaray since last year in a pot. I overwinter the banana in my basement, dark, 10 C, without water.

The banana is in a not good condition. My other musas i have overwintert in the basement looks better, like ice cream, rajapuri ....

I think you can overwinter Hajaray like helens hybrind outside in zone 9b without any problems.

Vielen Dank fuer deinen Antwort.

The result of the overwintering of Hajaray in a basement in the temperature
10C seems rather problematical. That means the temp. of 10C seems to be
rather difficult.
Therefore a sales talk that this basnana can endure -5C seems to be rather
exaggerated.

Does anyone have different experiences?

I'm sure if you store anything in the dark for months it's going to look pretty bad when you bring it out.

If it survived that is the main thing surely.

I Have never had hajaray,but going by other musa i have grown,overwintering in bright light at 10c has always been more successful for me than,overwintering in a dark room at 10c.

Agree on that one. I ll take a few pics of mine tommorow and post them. It will stay unprotected for comming Winter.

hi Dalamatiansoap , are you sure your banana is a Hajaray? looks like a sikkimensis or a hybrid Helen...
i lost my hajaray still in pot with a temp of -5°C...

I think it is a matter of course that Musa Hajaray looks like Sikkimensis which
is said to be the mother(?) of Hajaray.
Then, however, where is the feature of its father Rajapuri shown?

Hi and hello to the Hajaray growers,

I think it is about the time to show us all about the facts of harvesting of
Hajaray fruits. I have never seen or heard about the Hajaray's fruits.

I personally also grow Hajaray that neither bear fruits nor flower in spite
of the growing time of about 3 years.

Who can show me the real pictures of its fruits that he/she harvested?!

Hi all of Hajaray lovers,

I came to a supposition about the question why there are no reports of harvest of
this banana despite it passed more than several　years since it was
introduced us.

1. However cold hardy it is, winter in Europe with exceptional regions was too
cold to survive.
2. On the other hand, summer is too cool to maintain its normal and basical
growth to result of flowing and fruiting.

Although it is said to be very cold hardy, it is a tropical plant that needs
to grow during the grwoing seasons.
Therefore even if an overwintering succeeded, grwoing environment could not
be guaranteed in the summer if planted in the ground not in a green house.

What do you think about it?

Wow, 3 years :( Where are you located? Have had success with other bananas fruiting in your location?

Hi Richard,

I am located in a coastal city of Shizuoka, 150km west from Tokyo,
and perhaps　in 9a or 9b.
Yes, I succeed every year with other bananas' fruiting such as Cal. Gold,
Pisang Awak, Ice Cream and Dwf Cavendish etc.

Hi Richard,

That's why I stick to Hajaray and Pahari Kela, both of which seem to be
something funny.
