Saw my Grammpa's hometown in Slovenia

We have educational tv here called PBS & for 2 days gave a tour of places in Slovenia, Montenegro & Bosnia. My Grandfather is from Ljubljana, Slovenia. What a beautiful city it is! They showed Dubrovnik (in Montenegro) & called it "the pearl of the Adriatic. Also showed Bosnia & still damage from the war. It is mostly Muslim there.
I would love to go to Slovenia some day... I have relatives there. My Gramma grew up about 20 miles from my Grammpa - a town called Igg(?). Funny that they grew up so close but really met in Duluth, Minnesota. Lots of Slovenians there!
After the kids were grown, my Gramma moved here- to Milwaukee.
I have copies of when they came here by boat -- about 1 yr apart. It shows the date & even the name of ship they came in on.

Yes Ante, (was hoping you'd see this :)) I know you are in Croatia & Dubrovnik is South of you (Makarska) on Coast. Slovenia is the farthest north. I have a old map but, they showed a map of Yugoslavia with - I think split to 5 different countries now. Of 2 tv shows I saw, one was about Slovenia & one was mostly about coastal cities. Beautiful country there.

Oh, and thanks for the link! It shows some places I saw on tv. The pic of rooftops... they said most are new because during war in 90's, they got blown up. One guy said they fixed his house & said he could see the sky from living area.
I think it was 60's, my gramma went to visit her hometown & said it was sad to see the poverty there. She packed boxes of clothes she collected & shipped them. She did this for several yrs.

:waving: Hey Patty! My paternal Grandmother was from Yugoslavia. Ante told me that there are still people there inland with her maiden name.

Regarding Ljubljana... worth seeing for real. Much nicer than London, Brussels...

Yeah, northern USA is full of Slavs. Not only Slovenians. There are only 2 more countries like that in the world: Argentina and Southern Brazil. :bananas_b

Yeah, that was the more life appreciative, chance seeking group. That's also the reason why south of Brasil is so much more developed in compared to the north. :08:

Naah, it was totaly different back then. Most of them didnt even know where they were going. They were only interested to get in "America". States, Brazil, Chile,..., was all the same.

Very cool Patty! I think I may have seen those same shows and saw Croatia and Slovakia as well so made sure and watch those for obvious reasons ( to make fun of friends abroad!:ha:). Was it Rick Steve's Europe? I think that's the one that was on here on PBS..... and of course they were asking for donations while making a 2 hour show out of a 1 hour program!!!:ha:

I doubt that our countries were in one show alongside each other. There's only one such document - about 1st world war. ;) You meant to write Slovenia, Bob, ay? ;) :bananas_b

For instance, majority of Croats headed to Argentina. :) Majority of Slovaks to USA, majority of Poles to southern Brazil. :08:

Almost correct Jack but there are about 1 800 000 Poles in Brazil and 10 600 000 in USA :03:
Yehhhh... Pulaski Day... PC Style...:08:

Re: Saw my Grammpa's hometown in Slovenia

Yes Bob, it was Rick Steve's Europe.
My grandparents knew exactly where they wanted to go. We have a lot of polish ppl here too. And Germans, and Italians.... nevermind.
Seweryn, I'm also almost half Polish. A park across the street from me is called Pulaski Playground. This was predominantly Polish for many yrs.
Also, in your 2nd link (pc) shows St. Stanislaus church where I made my 1st communion & also went to the grAdeschool little while. That is on the south side of Milwaukee.

I'm on a roll now LOL. My mother's parents came here from Poland but I don't know where in Poland. They settled on the south side here & slovenians went to northern Minnesota for some reason.
