horse pile
hey guys my friend has a horse manure area, pile, pyramid whatever it is.I plan on planting my overwintered plants later this week.Should I use the stuff on top or bottom of the pile, and how much can I mix when planting Thanks

Re: horse pile
Well, it should be composted first, so try to get older stuff from the bottom of the heap. As to amounts, that's a good question. I don't know the answer. I would begin with a shovel full for a large banana plant and see how it handles it. You can always give it more in a month.

Re: horse pile
I am consumed with envy - I cannot get enough horse/cow manure! But better to let it age/mature for a few months or else it could burn the plants you want it to feed. Fresh manure is not a good thing, and if new manure has been shovelled on top of the old stuff, the urine etc will have soaked down through the older stuff. Collect as much as you can get, and let it sit and mature for a while. Once it has matured you can use as much as you like, and the growth will amaze you!

Re: horse pile
Manure makes excellent fertilizer. Fresh manure often contains too high levels of nitrogen, though. I'd use stuff from far down in the pile to ensure it's 'aged to perfection' LOL. Like Scot said, a shovel-full should work just fine to start with and then add more as the season progresses. I'm sure you'll be happy with its effects!

Re: horse pile
There was a craigslist add here for free horse poo. I'm gonna beat a path to that pile. Think Mike Rowe would give me an hand?

Re: horse pile
Best to keep the poop around the perimeter of the banana...not too close to the pseudo stem...

Re: horse pile
I'm starting a big garden at Mike's house & got a huge bucket of horse poop too. One guy says that they worm horses & that the worming med comes out in the poop. 'So what' I say. The guy who owns the horses (he delivered it from up the road) says they use it & it won't do any harm. I got it all spread out & tilled in before big rain. Now if it will only dry up enough to till once more & plant. Planting is 2 weeks late this year.

Re: horse pile
Actually that wasn't even all of it
I shovelled a bunch into the garden up by the house The front 1/2 of the boat has already been spread out |
Re: horse pile
You can always throw a few worms in there and have many when fishing time rolls around. There many be several million in my seven large cattle manure compost piles. Need some just come by and pick it up.
