Question about upcoming chilly nights.

Hello again guys. Here in a couple months the nights are going to be pretty chilly as well as the mornings. At what night temperature should I bring in my Dwarf Cavendish banana?

Re: Question about upcoming chilly nights.

I bring things in whenever the lows are below 40. Low 40's are just fine for any banana I've ever grown (including super dwarf cavendish) but cavendish are on the more cold sensitive end. I'm in zone 5 and my bananas are all planted in the ground currently. I have no plans to dig them up any time soon.

I watch the lows in the fall and when they get to or below 40, especially if there is a frost advisory, I dig everything up. If you've got things in pots, you can just move them in for nighttime and then back out during the day when the weather is nicer. That will extend your growing season a little, but don't expect much growth during the day unless temps are above 70 or so.

Thanks for your post Bryan. Although I may need help carrying it in. :ha:

The pot I have my naner in doesn't have handles and that sucker is heavy.

I don't have a dolly or any sort of tool to help me carry. :(

Well, apparently in/out is out of the question, but at least it's 'sorta' convenient rather than digging/potting. But yeah, you're fine till it gets colder.

Debating on whether to put it in the basement or upstairs in the living room.

Do a rootball drench with some insecticide before bringing it in or the ants will take over your house. This is not an option!!!

Could I just sprinkle cinnimon around the top part of the soil around the naners?

I've never had an issue with ants. Only issues I've had with bananas are spider mites, which have been a pretty significant issue in the past on overwintering bananas. Neem oil is a good option to combat them.

Here in FL, definitely not. I use Malathion which stinks for a few days. When the smell goes away I take it in. Have to be thorough.

When the fire ants starting biting you in bed at 3 AM you will think of the bananimal. Between screams! lolol
