Highgate leaves not fully unfolding
Multiple leaves in a row now have done this, where the leaf only half way unfolds. I usually intervene at some point but that always results in damage. It is almost like the rolled side is bound up on itself. Any ideas of what is going on and any solutions?
The bottom of the leaf has emerged past the petiole of the previous leaf. ![]() |

hummm ... do you have a red filter on the camera? Every thing in the photo is red; walls, flower, drapes.
Could be too much nitrogen fertilizer causing the leaves to grow too fast. This should be evidenced by a twisted cigar leaf too. |

I had a feeling the nitrogen levels could be causing this. A new cigar coming up binding current leaf. |
Re: Highgate leaves not fully unfolding
This type of symptom is common with container grown bananas, and is normally caused by too much fertilizer. It should go away when in the ground. If you were to continue growing in a container, I would recommend to flush the soil with water, and cut back on fertilizer. When I used to grow bananas in containers, I would prefer just to add all nutrients up front in the form of compost mixed into the medium, this was plenty for the plants to grow and fruit, and helped to avoid this problem with excess nutrient build up.

That's my guess. When you manually unroll the leaf half, do you find the next furl tightly stuck inside? Outdoors, the wind will help unroll it. |

Were you fertilizing extreme over winter??I have been fertilizing but never had this happen... Has it stopped?
