Cut Banana down for winter, growing back a week later!

I cut my banana tree off about a foot from the ground and buried it in mulch as we have cold winters in Kentucky. About a week after I cut it off it has grown 7 inches out of the pile of mulch! Is this normal? Should I cut it off again? We cut it down right before a 29 degree night, but then the weather got up to 80 degrees again a few days later. Just wondering whether I should leave it as it is or cut it off at the ground again ?

Yes that is pretty normal. It has happened to me many times up here in Ohio! I usually just leave it alone. This is just my opinion. Good luck next spring!

Growth will cease once the the ground temps are continuously in the low 40'S.
Until then your plant is still doing a lot underground(growing roots and such) where it is a toasty 55-60 degrees right now.

Should I leave the growth at has come out since I cut? Or go ahead and cut it off again when the weather gets colder?

Nope ...you just did th cut about 3 weeks before the plant was done...

Me....I am a grower who cut plants weeks ago to fit the schedule......let it roll.
Let the plant roll into the winter sleep...

After a few years of knowing your plant you will know when it is done for the season.
You will be able to predict your plants health over time and adjust your skills.

Just tossing out.....you/me have about 30- days left to grow our plants.
Your plant is cool weather plant.

Next year let the plant go till nature takes its course....

I know .....folks want to tidy up the landscape....me too....but you need to take in consideration of your plants needs.

Next year enjoy your plant till December.....yep.

Great photo of your plant..And have fun growing

Awesome thanks! When you say let it run it’s course, how do you know? Wait until leaves yellow, or what? Thanks!

Re: Cut Banana down for winter, growing back a week later!

Hey! I was just thinking about this thread today! I have to laugh because I just went out and looked at my own banana plants outside. They have been cut down and are now under a piece of my winter cover for my pool! Anyway, the cover just blew off and I got to see that my plants had grown at least 1 foot already since I cut them down! The funniest thing was the plants leaves grew downward!:ha: Literally the leaves are smashed up against the pseudo stem! It looked hilarious! So you see it’s fine! Once the temps get freezing again the leaves might get burnt but the whole plant should be fine come next spring! Good luck and thanks so much for listening to my story! I hope this makes you feel better or even have a laugh!
