I used to LIKE listening to cicadas before I got an annoying case of tinnitus, now it sounds like I have some stuck inside my head! :2750:

Well I found One half alive in the grass, everything below its wing joints was eaten or chopped off. I didnt even think to take a picture of it, I just threw it in the woods. It looked just like the one in the pictures, with the red eyes and the red tinted body. I thought I herd one or two in the woods a few nights ago, but there isnt a big swarm or anything like that yet.

God forbid if anyone has a swarm of them nearby. About 10 yrs ago, there was ONE in a tree in front of house. The cicada was close to my neighbors bdroom window. As soon as it got dark out, it would screach, LOUD & high pitched, stopping only for about 1 second & kept doing this till dawn. We didn't know what it was but figured it was a animal. He got a rifle out & shot up in tree LOL. Next day I called humane society & they told me it wqas a bug. The noise is their mating call & when they get laid, they'll stop screatching. Apparently there were no others around so this thing screeched for at least a month or longer.

Cicada are actually one fo teh few sounds that i actually can fall asleep too. Otherwise it has to be dead silent. The good thing is when you hear the cicadas you know warm temps are here.

I want this to help with my sleep. BTA - Soothing Sounds Mood Light I once got white noise (cassette) and it worked a treat, its all different now though. This would be great for babies for settling them down. |

I was in the St. Loius area the last time they appeared and there was an overlap of two different populations emerging at once and the sound was deafening (they could be heard over Interstate traffic) and the numbers were amazing. Once they started dying off there were piles of them like a foot deep underneath trees.
