basjoo vs. horse
My basjoo, diameter at ground level of 3.25 inches, corm at time of planting 7 weeks ago of about 5.5 inches, had a run in yesterday with a horse that had gotten away from its owner.
The pstem must be broken to some degree, although I cannot see the damage. The damage must be underground I'm guessing. The plant has six leaves and cannot stand upright without support. So far it shows no obvious signs of damage, apart from some torn leaves and the floppy pstem. Am I better off staking it up and letting it grow, if it will, or better cutting it down even with the ground and letting it grow back. Can it repair the pstem? If it can, will it be more prone to breaking off during a storm? |
Re: basjoo vs. horse
Try staking it up and see what happens. Banana plants can take a lot of abuse. I had an entire p-stem rot off of one of my plants, and it just sent up a pup to replace it instead.

Re: basjoo vs. horse
I checked and removed the stake. My basjoo is standing upright without assistance and is pushing out a hew leaf. It's at a bit different angle than it was before it's encounter with the horse, but standing it is. :)
