Ensete Ventricosum

Not quite sure how to post pictures yet but here it goes. I ordered seed from Whatcom and received them 12/10/8. I soaked them three days and planted in perlite. I then floated them in the aquarium. The temp is set at 79 degrees. I had germination on 12/25/8. Here is a pic on 1/4/9.

Congrats Andrew! I have a bunch of these guys and I just luv them. Contrary to belief I find that they germinate with higher heat. I have tried both ways and clearly I get better results if the germ temp is about 100+F. They do very well in a loose soil media with lots of water here. I tried a bunch of seedlings in a more compact water retaining media and they started to crash out after a month.
All the best.:0517:

Michael, I basically use a burnt top soil which is peculiar to M'sia. It is very porous and gives the roots lots of room to move. I start the newly germinated plts right off the germination box with this when they have at least 2 leaves. After a month, I start giving them processed sheep pellet dung fert from NZ. From this point, they grow like crazy.
As for you, as long as water gets through the soil without being stagnant in it, it should be ok. The Ensete family don't like wet legs!
All the best. :0517:
