Dwarf Brazilian Banana for California
I am a new to growing banana and excited!
Our house is in Venice Beach CA (Los Angeles County) and would love to plant Dwarf Brazilian Banana in our yard. I love Hawaiian Apple Banana because it is not too sweet and has the pleasant acidity. I am also interested in other compact (could be tall but not wide) edible banana plant for part shade area at our back yard. |

I would recommend several sources.
Best day, a forum member here that appears to live in your vicinity. Here's the link to his listing: pitangadiego, another forum member here, but a bit further away in San Diego. He's got a lovely assortment of varieties and can probably recommend other varieties for you. sddarkman619, a forum moderator. He does mail order banana plants, not sure if he's got any in stock right now but it's worth asking. As for other edible banana cultivars, Raja Puri is fairly similar to Dwarf Brazilian in most respects. There's another "Manzano"/"Apple" variety floating around, sometimes called "Silk Fig" to not confuse it with Brazilian. Dwarf Orinoco is fairly common, but not exciting to most folks. Namwa is a popular one (that comes in tall and short forms), it sometimes has a bit of acidity/tartness like an apple. I'd suggest buying some at an Asian market (they're often sold as Thai bananas) to taste test. |
