I'm not sure what a Cattelya looks like, but it might just be the start of my orchid garden... or I suppose I'll have to donate the Ae Ae to a deserving Floridian...:2623: |

Re: Ae Ae Contest!
Yesterday a friend stopped by and I told him about the Ae Ae contest. Of course he wanted to know when the fruit would be ripe. Honestly I have no idea when the fruit will be ripe. This week the temperature dropped to 41, 51 and another 41 but the last two days it topped 80. Cold weather will slow it up and rain will step it up. Today I took a picture and posted it. Check it out and see if it looks bigger.

I posted another picture of the Ae Ae: http://togofcoralgables.com/AeAebananas.aspx

Re: Ae Ae Contest!
OK no more entries after Helen's, please. Jordan wanted to keep it open but I must step in now and close this contest for entries. It's becoming less and less fair, so before people get upset, lets close the contest and wish everyone who got in on it GOOD LUCK and let the best guesser win!

Re: Ae Ae Contest!
I just downloaded two jpgs on my site. The fruit seems to be getting larger and the pups are starting to grow. Check it out.

Re: Ae Ae Contest!
That's cool. Hopefully they'll be ready by, oh I don't know, sometime around June the third.
Curiously, have you cut the bloom off, or do you leave it on? |
Re: Ae Ae Contest!
Generally speaking for all of my banana plants, I cut off the flower after it's about 1 ft beyond the last hand of bananas.
|
Re: Ae Ae Contest!
I have never cut off the bud. I have not seen any problem. It's just something to do, because someone told you to do it.
|
Re: Ae Ae Contest!
I know Jarred the contest is closed i already lost im gonna have fun though since my b day is July 2 thats when they will be ready so i can eat one Right ?????? LOL Tammy Sticks out toungue dont add it im just playing GOOD luck all.

And as a matter of fact, it's not just something to do. Cutting the bud off removes the apical meristem of the plant. Whether or not this actually helps the fruit mature quicker or not is up for debate. It does remove the apical dominance for that pseudostem however, and enables the lateral buds on the corm to start growing, or growing faster. So...if you wanted your pups to grow faster, cutting the bud off would accomplish that. :2623: |
Re: Ae Ae Contest!
Any update on the progress, Jordan?

Re: Ae Ae Contest!
I took a picture today and they look like they are starting to fatten up. I will post it in about an hour. This cool weather is not doing any good for the Ae Ae growth.
My PC's fan failed four nights ago. I didn't use it until I got the fan from Dell. Then just 5 minutes to get it running, ohhh do I have the emails. jns |
Re: Ae Ae Contest!

Re: Ae Ae Contest!
I posted todays picture, April 22 07.
http://togofcoralgables.com/AeAebananas.aspx The picture looks a little more yellow then the true green. The fruit is starting to fatten up. It we be ready in a few weeks. We will have a tasting on a Saturday or Sunday after the first fruit is picked. |
Re: Ae Ae Contest!
You mean ready around the 7th May? Sounds good to me ..
|
Re: Ae Ae Contest!
Okay - West Coast people. Who's up for a road trip??? :-)
There's a Wine train up the coast. Why can't they have a Banana train??? :bananajoy: |
Re: Banana train???
Yer on!
But I'm sending super, dooper, astoundingly powerful mental fruit-ripening rays to get 'em ready on MayDay - the 1st! Does the train have door-front service or shall I walk meself on down to the station? |
