Zone 5 advice
 

I tried to post a photo but it didn't seem to appear though the message said it was accepted. I digress I have for the first time in 10 years actually overwintered a banana plant. (My specialty is underwintering) The plant I wanted to show you is 25' tall with 7 large stems and a lot of pups showing up. I will attempt to Duplicate last winter with 4' of shredded leaves. Should I leave the pups in situ and divide in spring?

Once you have uploaded the picture to this site, Try copy and pasting the top line of text(under you picture in the photo gallery) to your message, looks like you haven't uploaded since 07, click the photo gallery tab and figure it out.
You know everyone's gotta want to see a pic ;) what type of nana? Unlike bulbs rhizomes and tubers roots; I would think Corms would be more susceptible to rot and disease during the winter with exposed corm to the elements, I have little experience with overwintering Bananas. Where the Pros at? chime in anytime

Sorry to bother but when I upload it tells me congratulations on my success but the photo never shows up. I accidentally tried to use Raw the first time but now am on jpegs. Well I have posted before but the ability seems to have eluded me. I'm sure it's my fault what with all the security devices on my browser and yes I tried with 4 different browsers. I am my own worst enemy. The banana was a very generic 3.99 in a 4" pot from a local nursery and it was located in the aquatic plant section.

There are some alternate ways to get your pics into your posts. Some folks upload the pics to their photobucket accounts, then add the pics to their posts from there. I add pics to my Blogger blog, then just copy and paste the html info from the post editor there over to the 'Post Reply' or 'Post New Thread' editor here.

I've never done what you're doing, so I can't speak from experience, but I'd wait till spring before doing any major messing with the corms and roots. Seems like that would give them the best chance at handling the winter well, and for getting pups and mommas re-established quickly after being separated.

Your photo file is probably too big. The size limit quoted on the web site is larger than the size of photo you can actually upload. JPG files should work fine if they're small enough.

Use a photo editing program such as GIMP or PhotoShop to resize your photo. I have a 9 MegaPixel camera. I shrink my photos to 20% and then SAVE_AS to another name so I still have the original, unshrunk photo. If your camera has less than 9MPixels, you may only need to shrink to 30 or 40 percent. If it has more than 9MP, you may have to shrink it more. Try different shrinkage factors--see what works for you.

GIMP--GNU Image Manipulation Program is a free download. Here is a Windows installer:

(You're on your own, here. I don't use Windows anymore, so I haven't tried this installer.)

If you're using Linux instead of Windows (good for you!), GIMP is probably included as part of your distribution, and may already be installed.

Do you find it necceasry to pile four feet of shredded leaves at the base? I live in central Florida and we really do not get a hard long frost, if we get a frost at all. Should I winterize them like that here in Florida?
