Being in the nursery business, I normally do not buy any plants in big box stores. However, I do run through their nursery sections, to see what they have, and to check prices. After all, they are my competition. ( I also go thru the produce section, in supermarkets, to see if they have anything I can grow from seed.)
I have seen several postings from people telling about the bargains they found in various chains. We have two Home Depots, and a Loew's on Staten Island. During the past week I visited all three of these stores plus, today, just across the bridge, a HD, in Woodbridge, NJ.
In one HD, on Staten Island, they had about four bananas, in 6 inch azalea (squat) pots, that were labeled, "Banana Cavendish". They were about the size of some tissue culture liners, that I got from Agri Starts, in February, and grew on. (about 8-10 inch total height They wanted $9.99, plus tax for them. The other two HDs, and the Loew's had none.

Sorry Man...Talk about rotten luck.
I picked up 2 Grand Nains and a Dwarf Cavendish in 5 gallon pots, and on sale at my local Lowe's last week. Our Wal-Mart & HD had no bananas at that time either.
I found Basjoo, Rojo & Red Abyss. too.

Hope you find what you're looking for so you can price accordingly.
Sounds like a Seller's market up there!!

Not to change the subject but we should a Banana Reference guide for those us like me who cant really tell all the differences in bananas we need a field guide. I've seen plenty of bananas that seem to be mislabeled for cheap but I havent wanted to get them since Im only interested in Edible Nanners,.

I know we have the wiki, But I meant some something we can carry with us. Or maybe thats just something I might have to make for myself.

Wow , this thread derailed very quickly.
Cheryl _ I have no rotten luck. In my time in the business, I have produced hundreds of thousands of plants. I go into places like HD to see what they are selling for. Most of my customers are local garden centers. However, if someone comes in, with money in their hand, I don't turn them away. The difference is : Home Depot, et al buy their plants. Everything I sell is produced right here, , either from cuttings, (most plants) or seed, (dogwoods and Japaneese Maples, etc.) or we start from TC plants (bananas, hostas, and others, etc.)
So, I am very happy when my competitors do not have product.

Sorry John_ny, I only meant it to be a good thing, I understood where you were going with that...
I also am a proprietor, but not in the plant business...I know how important it is to shop the competition too!
