What is doing this?
 

I have noticed this on my heliconia's, canna's and to a much smaller degree on my banana's.

It is a very distinct pattern; appears to be chewing?
I cannot see anything, and do not know when it is happening (IE night or day)

When i get new leafs the always seem to have a seres of Small brown dots on them just like your diagram i attribute this to sun iv never seen and bugs on them i live in NV and we don't have alot of bugs compared to other places they don't seem to hurt any thing but i have vary limited experience Medea hound or chon are good people to ask the now just about anything you could want to know about Bananas:bunchonanas:

These are actually holes clear through mature leaves.

A nice even line, looks like the leaves were straffed by a plane!

I get the same thing. Looks like something was eating into the leaf while it was still curled up, prior to opening.

What it is, I'd be interested to know too!!!

That is your freindly leaf roller, I hate them and they love my Cannas. Try using Orthene on the leaves befroe the unfurl as this is where they live and breed. You better hurry becuase if they are happy the will propogate quickly.:rollerbananadone:

Yes, definitely leafroller damage. You can also spray with a product called Thuricide or use a dust called Dipel. Each contain the active ingredient Bacillus thurengensis, a naturally occuring organism that parasitizes the leafroller worm and kills it.

I just had to spray my cannas today because of the leafrollers. I use Orthene on mine with great success...

I'm canna-free thanks to leafroller aggravation.
People get one glimpse of your eaten leaves and it ruins the whole experience of seeing the garden.
At the very least (if you don't spray) look for folded over leaves and squish them.

Me and my daughter went over all the plants leaves last night for 20 minutes and found no worms, no silk nothing???

It certainly fits the bill for the leaf roller though.

The only thing I can think of is:
It could be those giant yellow grass-hoppers (locust?) ; the neighbors yard is infested.
or since we have a large lizard and wasp/hornet population they (the leaf-rollers) are getting eaten as fast as they arrive

Perplexed I am.

We have been lucky this yr.. No leaf rollers Yet..LOL The cows got in the side yard and mowed the cannas down..It is always the first place they go...Talk about unsitely.LOL

I'm lucky too. I haven't noticed any leaf rollers this year.

We get the same thing here in the UK but its slugs or snails that much the leaf in its roller stage and then you get the lace curtain effect.

They always leave the slimy tell tale trail behind.

Leafroller presence has been very low in my landscape as well this year. Maybe it'll be a light year for them...one can only hope! I have noticed damage appear like in the illustration above and never see any silk or leaves bound up. I think this damage is done while the leaf is still in the process of pushing out and the caterpillar has no need to "stitch" it closed. By the time the leaf unrolls, the leafroller is already gone and all you see is the little shotholes.

those nasty grasshoppers are called lubber grasshoppers, and your right they breed like crazy here!!!!

I swear when they mature they will hiss and jump at you!

I guess i'll just treat as if it were the leaf-rollers.

This is very minor damage...I would advise against pesticides...I get this occasionally...usually only one maybe two leaves are "barely affected"...just part of the bugs in the garden...

See this is why you should live in Nevada no leaf rollers here. iv herd that they are here but in 11 years if not seen any. are only two bad pest are Spider mite and the dreaded Mohave Caterpillar. the biggest one iv ever seen! they sometimes get to be over 5" Long and fat. boy they can devastate a tomato plant in one night. but i haven't seen any yet this year mostly in late summer.:nanertank:
