What to do about rootbound plants
 

Hi All,

I've never quite figured out what the best way to handle rootbound plants was. In the past I used to just plant it as it was whenever repotting or putting it in the ground (I figured the less I disturbed it the better). Recently I learned more and started trying to loosen up the roots as best I could but this isnt really possible once the plant gets past a certain size. On Sunday, I read that you are supposed to make 4-5 vertical cuts down the side of the rootball. I assume this is to sever the bound roots and encourage it to grow outwards, but this seems like it would also incur a lot of shock as well.

Anyone have any advice on the best way to handle rootbound plants?

Obviously it is best to prevent this from happening in the first place but that isn't always possible as some plants come this way already when you buy them.

Sever them as described. If you think a lot of roots were cut, then consider removing a few leaves as this will balance water uptake and traspirative losses.

I just plant them, and they do fine. They will have nice long roots in a short time.
